The Regional Church Archives Stuttgart is responsible for the archival records of the Protestant Church of Württemberg. We keep the records of the Oberkirchenrat, which have been removed from the current registry but are worth keeping, as well as the archives of many deanery offices, parish offices, church bodies and institutions, as well as collections and estates of pastors or other persons associated with the regional church, regardless of the form of the data carriers. Our holdings begin in the 16th century and extend into the second half of the 20th century and comprise around 13 kilometers of shelving (as of 2024). By making our holdings available in the reading room and online, we enable historical research into the history of the Protestant regional church in all its facets and peculiarities.

The Regional Church Archives Stuttgart owes its origins to the separation between state and church, as a result of which the Consistory's records were transferred to the latter by agreement between the Ministry of Worship and the Evangelical Church Council on September 8, 1925. The anti-church stance of the party and state after 1933 finally made the establishment of a state church archive indispensable, especially for the defense of church legal claims.

The archive was initially located in the registry rooms in the Oberkirchenrat office building in Stuttgart, the former Thurn und Taxis post office, and was run on a part-time basis. After several relocations it is now housed in Stuttgart-Möhringen, in the former buildings of the printing works of the German Bible Society. In 2024 it is operated by fifteen full-time employees. It is also possible to complete a voluntary year in heritage conservation there.
