Die Überlieferung der Nachlässe ist durch systematische Sammlungstätigkeit des Bezirksparteiarchivs bzw. der Bezirksleitungen entstanden. Mit der Erfassung des biographischen Materials wurde 1982 begonnen. Folgende Zielgruppen waren für die Sammlung vorgesehen: Mitglieder regionaler Leitungsgremien der Kommunistischen Partei Deutschlands (KPD) und Sozialdemokratischen Partei Deutschlands (SPD), Widerstandskämpfer, Mitglieder der Leitungsebenen und Mitglieder, die hohe staatliche Auszeichnungen erhalten haben.
Die bei den Kommissionen zur Erforschung der Geschichte der örtlichen Arbeiterbewegung eingerichteten Arbeitsgruppen "Sammlung von Nachlässen und Erinnerungen" unterstützten die Arbeit. Bis 1989 gelangten Personenfonds überwiegend als Nachlasssplitter ins Parteiarchiv. Ein Teil der Unterlagen wurde nach 1989/90 durch die Eigentümer zurückgefordert und auch zurückgegeben.
The Bundeszentralkartei (BZK) is the central register of the federal government and federal states for completed compensation proceedings. When a claim is entered into the BZK, a number is assigned for unique identification. This BZK number refers to a compensation claim, not to a person. If a person has made several claims (e.g. for themselves and for relatives), each claim generally has its own BZK number. Often, the file number of the respective compensation authority is used as the BZK number.
This number is important for making an inquiry to the relevant archive.

If the application was submitted by a person other than the persecuted person, this other person is designated as ‘antragstellend’ and their relationship to the persecuted person, if there is one, is noted. In the sources, the persecuted person is sometimes referred to as ‘Geschädigter’ (aggrieved party) and the applicant as ‘Anspruchsberechtigter’(claimant).
