Tektonikbeschreibung: Hervorgegangen aus der 1839 gegründeten Gymnastischen Anstalt für Studierende bzw. dem seit 1934 so bezeichneten "Institut für Leibesübungen" mit dem Akademischen Turn- und Sportlehrer als selbständigem Vorstand, 1939-1945 mit Abteilung Luftfahrt (Segelflug). Das Institut dient neben dem allgemeinen Studentensport seit 1955 auch der Sportlehrerausbildung zunächst für Lehramtsstudierende als Nebenfach, seit 1968 auch im Haupfach. 1968 dem Lehrstuhl "Theorie der Leibeserziehung", 1971 dem Fachbereich "Sozial- und Verhaltenswissenschaften, Pädagogik" zugeordnet, seither Institut für Sportwissenschaft. Bei der Fakultätsneugliederung 2010 dem Fachbereich Sozialwissenschaften der Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät zugeordnet.
