Bestandsgeschichte: Die Fotosammlung (BA) kann als Mischbestand charakterisiert werden. Die Bilddokumente gelangten auf unterschiedlichem Weg in das Stadtarchiv. Der größte Teil der Aufnahmen stammt aus Übernahmen aus den Ämtern der Stadtverwaltung. Weitere Erwerbungen erfolgten u. a. durch:
- zielgerichteten Ankauf von Fotografien,
- ausgewählten Ankauf von Ansichtspostkarten, deren Motive auf realistischen Aufnahmen basieren,
- Schenkungen von Privatpersonen,
- Anfertigung von Aufnahmen im Auftrag des Stadtarchivs.
Die Fotografien widerspiegeln Architektur, Wirtschaft, Kultur und kommunale Angelegenheiten der Stadt Leipzig. Auf anschauliche Weise wird das Leipziger Großstadtleben dokumentiert.
In der Fotosammlung befinden sich u. a. Aufnahmen folgender Fotografinnen und Fotografen: Dagmar Agsten, Anton Blaschke, Fritz Cölln, Constanze Därr, Werner Edel, Paul Faulstich, Alfred Gruber, Paul Kabisch, Heinrich Kirchhoff, Armin Kühne, Herbert Lachmann, Karl-Heinz Mai, Sylvia-Marita Plath, Uwe Pullwitt, Alexander Seitz, Alfons Trapp, Gerhard Treblegar, Hermann Walter, Georg Zschäpitz.
